Small flurries cause busy Saturday afternoon in Knox County
KNOX COUNTY — A couple of hours of snow flurries Saturday afternoon, Feb. 19, 2022 led to a busy hour and a half for the Knox Regional Communications Center, responders, and plow trucks in Knox County.
At the shoreline, in Rockland, a quick scrape of the windshield and brush off of the back window were all that was needed in order to get out onto the mostly-clear asphalt. However, many regions north, south, and west of the city didn’t fare as easily.
Tires attempting to brake on top of unplowed snow at the turnoff at Chickawaukie Pond on the Rockport side of Route 1 required multiple pumps of the brake pedal before coming to a halt. But, for some drivers already in the roadway, stopping didn’t occur until another force intervened.
At 3:11 p.m., Hope responders were alerted to a rollover on Crabtree Road. No one reported injuries despite the vehicle landing on its roof. An hour later, at approximately 4:25 p.m., Warren fire and ambulance were called to a two-vehicle crash near Camden Road (Route 90) and Cooper Road. In between those two incidents, Thomaston police, fire, and ambulance tended to a vehicle that hit a guardrail along Route 1 near the Thomaston-Warren line, before helping with traffic control on New County Road (Route 1) near Dragon Cement for a vehicle off the road (tended to by a Sheriff’s deputy who happened to be driving past), all while a different Thomaston police unit tended to a minor crash near the intersection of Old County and West Meadow roads, before taking a look at a watermain break on Sunrise Terrace.
After leaving the rollover on Crabtree, Hope firefighters and North East Ambulance were called to check on another minor crash near the intersection of Barnestown and Gillette roads, and Rockport police stood by at Route 17 and Meadow Street as a tow truck pulled a vehicle from the ditch.
