Camden Conservation Commission honors Douglas Johnson for dedicated service
The Camden Conservation Commission presented Doug Johnson with its Dedicated Service Award April 18 at the Camden Opera House.
Johnson joined the CCC in 1993, retired in 2017, and was chairman of the Commission for most of the intervening years.
Along with his wife, Nancy Caudle-Johnson, he promoted Camden as an official Tree City USA since 1994. With Bart Woods, Camden’s tree warden, Doug conducted Camden’s first tree inventory.
In 2004, he served on the Camden Library’s committee overseeing the renovation of the Harbor Park and Amphitheater.
With Marina Schaffler in 2007-8, he helped organize a natural land survey for the Town of Camden.
He assisted Camden in the purchase and preservation of the Camden Bog on Park Street.
During the renovation of High Street, he worked to ensure that the Department of Transportation preserved the maximum number of trees possible.
During construction of the Kuller Trail at the Camden Snow Bowl, Doug identified large specimen trees for preservation, and when the Town Forest was being considered for logging, Doug worked to highlight the need to preserve the forest for recreation, aesthetics and erosion control.
In 2017, with Roger Rittmaster, he oversaw the development of an Emerald Ash Borer response plan for Camden in order to address the threat caused by this invasive beetle.
The CCC thanks and congratulates Doug Johnson for his leadership and many years of service to the Camden community.
