LINCOLNVILLE — Visible Mending Workshop will be held Saturday, April 27, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m., at Lincolnville Community Library.

“Textile and apparel manufacturing is the second most polluting industry in the world, and the average US citizen throws away 70 pounds of textiles, or 5% of landfill space, each year,” said LCL, in a news release.

Instead of wasting perfectly good clothing in want of repair, “Visible Mending,” is encouraged; with Visible Mending the repair is highlighted and becomes part of the story of the garment.

This free session will be hands on practice presented by two dynamic and fun leaders: Sarah Kuhn is an enthusiastic maker and Lincolnville resident who spent three decades on the faculty at UMass Lowell. Her mother taught her machine sewing at an early age, but it is only very recently that she discovered the joys of hand sewing and visible mending. She can also be found knitting away in coffee shops and at boring meetings, or crocheting mathematical objects called “hyperbolic planes.”

Sarah Kuhn and Sara Beth Casburn love mending because it’s useful; it engages the hands and the mind; it builds community; it’s artistic; it’s self-care; it extends the life of cherished clothing and heirlooms; and it connects us to an earlier, less wasteful era.

Kuhn is the author of the book Transforming Learning Through Tangible Instruction: The Case for Thinking With Things.

Sara Beth Casburn lives in and works on an 1850s farmhouse with her husband, Daniel, in Searsmont. Jam Brook Farm is the name of their growing farmstead with a sewing studio and wood shop. They do furniture repair, mending and alterations, and host farm stays.
