Walter William Wooster, Jr, obituary
WARREN — We remember Walter William Wooster, Jr, whose spirit departed from us early Wednesday, September 11, 2024 at the age of 57. Walt was a beacon of unwavering friendship, family loyalty and kindness. He left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Born in Connecticut in 1967, he moved to Maine to start his life as a true ‘Mainah’ at the age of three. Nicknamed ‘Wally’ by his family, in his younger years he played pee-wee football, was in the boy scouts and created plenty of mischief and wonderful memories every summer with his family at Sandy Shores Campground. These summers in particular hold a special place in the hearts of his siblings and cousins.
As he grew, he spent hours learning to fish and hunt from his Dad, Walt Sr., something he cherished as an adult as well. His first cars were a VW Beetle and Chevy Stepside and he stayed a Chevy man.
Walt’s son, Jake, was born in April of 1992. As his father had taught him, Walt passed these teachings to his son; his vast knowledge of carpentry, mechanics and his exceptional work ethic. Starting with auto mechanics in the garage in Burkettville with Jake as young as a year old, he had him driving at four years old down Pines Plains Road in Liberty. They also spent many hours together hunting and fishing. As a teenager, Jake worked with this Dad as a builder and finish carpenter and on the ocean lobstering. As Jake became a young adult, they worked many years together in the boat shop working with fiberglass and later moved into carpentry, building full houses together.
Walt’s daughter Ruby arrived in July of 2010. As with his son, he spent many hours with Ruby fishing and teaching her to drive (on the same road as her brother) and taught her how to shoot targets in the pit. Making him both frustrated and proud, she began getting better marks than Walt. They spent hours together in a side-by-side, 4-wheeling through the woods exploring. For the last year, Ruby was Walt’s full-fledged deckhand on the Sea Gypsy, where she learned his disciplined work ethic as well.
Walt spent his adult years between the land and sea. He made his living with home and commercial building carpentry, but his true love was lobstering and commercial fishing. The ocean seemed to call to him. As a young man he spent years lobstering with his father before moving offshore as an adult, and later to Matinicus for almost 15 years. He was experienced, knowledgeable and eager to go every single day. A great asset to those who were fortunate enough to have him, his dedication grew into great loyalty and friendship to many. The impact he had on many communities will be felt for years to come.
Predeceased by his father, Walter William Wooster Sr., Walt is survived by his mother, Dianne Wooster; his children, a son Jake and his wife Victoria and granddaughter Raelee, his daughter Ruby Wooster Sewall; his sister Teri Casey and her husband Roger and their children Nick and Miranda; his brother Kenny Wooster and his daughter Autumn; as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins.
A Ceremony at Sea will be held on Sunday, September 29, 2024, leaving J&J Lobster's wharf at 11 a.m. A land Celebration of Life gathering will follow at 1 p.m., at J&J Lobster, 10 Front Street Rockland, ME 04841.
