Sundog Outdoor Expeditions offers after-school winter outdoor programs for children starting January 28

Starting in late January, the nonprofit Sundog Outdoor Expeditions will run two after-school programs: Mountain Biking on Winter Trails (fat tire bikes) for fifth and sixth graders, and Alpine Touring (backcountry skiing and snow boarding) for seventh and eighth graders.

SunDog works with middle school youth in the local Midcoast community, promoting character building skills, and connecting youth with nature, peers and community.

The organization’s philosophy is that: “With the long winters in Maine it is important to expose local kids to activities that will keep them  outdoors. Cold weather and darkness make it just too easy these days for kids to stay indoors and on their screens,” according to a news release.

Sundog programs are taught 100% outdoors and include technical skills-based learning, environmental education, a character curriculum, and a community service project.

Sundog is getting children outdoors, off their screens, providing them with real life challenges, and ultimately, helping them to become thoughtful, confident and competent individuals.

Each program meets after-school twice a week for 6 weeks to train and prepare for a wilderness expedition. After 12 sessions, students put their skills to the test on a final two-day expedition.

“When a young person has a positive self-esteem and has developed leadership skills, they grow into healthy individuals who are able to thrive, achieve their goals, and contribute to their communities,” the press release said.
