St. George proposes $6.2 million school budget

    ST. GEORGE — Voters casting ballots for the May 10 election will be tasked with voting on 10 warrant articles for the St. George Municipal School Unit school budget referendum. 

    Below is a rundown of the 10 warrant articles appearing on the ballot. 

    Article 1, School Budget. Shall the Town of St. George appropriate the sum of $6,191,929.57 and raise the sum of $5,426,133.52 for the 2021-2022 school budget?

    School Board Recommends a “Yes” Vote.

    Voter Information: The St. George Municipal School Unit school budget submitted in this Article 1 totals $6,191,929.57. It includes locally raised funds in the amount of $5,426,133.52, to be assessed in shares to member municipalities in accordance with the Town’s cost sharing formula and state law. The locally raised amount exceeds the maximum state and local spending target by $2,074,782.39.

    This budget includes these cost centers and amounts:
    Regular Instruction — $2,948,899.57
    Special Education — $1,268,480.17
    Career and Technical Education — $7,152.24
    Other Instruction — $48,243.31
    Student and Staff Support — $391,695.03
    System Administration — $363,692.68
    School Administration — $168,400.85
    Transportation and Buses — $439,666.09
    Facilities Maintenance — $421,571.71
    Debt Service and Other Commitments — $134,127.92
    All Other Expenditures — $0.00
    Total Authorized Expenditures — $6,191,929.57

    Article 2, Cost Center Transfers. Shall the School Committee be authorized to transfer amounts exceeding 5% of the total appropriation for any cost center to another cost center or among other cost centers for the 2021-2022 fiscal year, provided that transfers shall not be permitted to increase the authorized total school budget?

    School Board Recommends a “Yes” Vote.

    Article 3, School Nutrition Program: Shall the Town be authorized to raise and appropriate $122,120.52 for the school nutrition program with authorization to expend any additional, incidental, or miscellaneous receipts in the interest and for the well-being of the school nutrition program?

    School Board Recommends a “Yes” Vote.

    Article 4, Minor Capital Reserve Fund: Shall the School Committee be authorized to expend up to $70,000 from the Minor Capital Reserve Fund ($100K) to replace roof section 6 and re-cover roof section 9a; and to expend up to the remaining balance $30,000 of said reserve fund for minor capital costs that may arise?

    School Board Recommends a “Yes” Vote.

    Article 5, Transportation: Shall the School Committee be authorized to expend $16,740 from the Transportation Reserve Fund ($50K) to pay the final bus lease payment on lease ME1928-05; and to expend up to $33,260 from said reserve fund for transportation costs that may arise?

    School Board Recommends a “Yes” Vote.

    Article 6, Food Service: Shall the School Committee be authorized to expend up to $30,000 from the Food Service Reserve Fund ($30K) for food service costs that may arise?

    School Board Recommends a “Yes” Vote.

    Article 7, Grants: In addition to amounts approved in the preceding articles, shall the School Committee be authorized to expend such other sums as may be received from federal or state grants or programs or other sources during the fiscal year for school and other program purposes, provided that such grants, programs or other sources do not require the expenditure of other funds not previously appropriated?

    School Board Recommends a “Yes” Vote.

    Article 8, RSU 13: Shall the School Committee be authorized to expend $78,807.78 from undesignated fund balance to settle RSU13 regular education reconciled tuition balances for FY16-FY19?

    School Board Recommends a “Yes” Vote.

    Article 9, CTE Region Budget: Shall the regional career and technical operating budget as approved by the Region 8 Cooperative Board for the year beginning July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2022 be approved in the amount of $5,446,304.00?

    School Board Recommends a “Yes” Vote.

    Article 10, CTE Region Adult Ed Budget: Shall the career and technical education region appropriate $236,200.00 for Adult Education for the year beginning July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2022 and raise $89,000.00 as the local share with authorization to expend any additional, incidental, or miscellaneous receipts in the interest and for the well-being of the Adult Education Program, and shall the Town of St. George raise and appropriate $4,093.59 as the local share with authorization to expend any additional incidental, or miscellaneous receipts in the interest and for the well-being of the Adult Education Program.
