Slushy road conditions in Camden send six to the hospital
CAMDEN — Spring Brook Hill on Route 1, just north of Camden Hills State Park, can be a bit of a nail-biter to travel when road conditions are icy and slushy. It’s a big hill, with a curve at the top and bottom, and deep drop-offs on either side where the road crosses Spring Brook. In inclement weather one can almost bet it will claim a car and its occupant, or six.
That was the case Wednesday morning, at 6:50, for 51-year-old Gary White, who was driving his 2005 Subaru station wagon north on Route 1 (Belfast Road) with five passengers.
According to Camden Police officer Allen Weaver Jr., White, of Camden, lost control in the slushy conditions.
“He crossed into the southbound lane and then went into the ditch, where he rolled once and the car came to rest on its wheels in the ditch,” said Weaver. “The windows were blown out and stuff from inside the car was strewn around. It was probably pretty scary.”
White’s wife, Terry White, 51, sustained an injury to her hand, while Gary complained of general pain. Both were taken to Pen Bay Medical Center by North East Mobile Health Services ambulance.
Also transported to the hospital by North East were three other passengers, including 42-year-old John Carr, with complaints of chest pain, 40-year-old Sherri Carr, with a minor head laceration, and 33-year-old Kathleen Beaulieu, who had complaints of head pain.
Weaver said that the group was headed to Belfast to work, when the crash occurred. He said that none of the injuries appeared serious.
Camden Fire Department also responded to the accident and traffic was slowed in the area until the scene was cleared. Weaver was assisted at the scene by officer Sam Butler.
