Sen. Curry pleased to see DOT’s ‘strong investment’ in Waldo County infrastructure

    AUGUSTA — Sen. Chip Curry, D-Belfast, is pleased with the details of Maine’s three-year transportation infrastructure work plan, and what it means for Waldo County.

    The plan is released annually with an outline of the Maine Department of Transportation’s strategy for road, bridge and other transportation upgrades and maintenance projects.

    “Everyone here in Waldo County knows just how much our roads and bridges need improvement,” said Sen. Curry. “I’m glad to see such strong investment from the Maine Department of Transportation. I encourage everyone to read more about their plans.”

    According to the MDOT, the work plan covers approximately $2.71 billion worth of construction and maintenance, which includes 2,180 work items.

    The three-year plan estimates MDOT will invest in 100 miles of highway construction and rehabilitation; 893 miles of pavement preservation; 2,175 miles of light capital paving for roads and highways; 222 safety and spot improvements; and 166 bridge projects.

    The following breakdown is the planned capital and maintenance work for the communities in Senate District 11 in 2021:

    Aviation:

    In Belfast, safety and infrastructure improvements at the airport that may include the first phase of a fuel farm installation.

     

    Bridge Work:

    In Jackson, replacement of Great Farm Bridge over Great Farm Brook located 0.12 of a mile south of Great Farm Road.

    In Prospect, a bridge improvement project for Colson Bridge over Colson Stream located 0.38 of a mile north of Hawes Bridge Road.

    In Troy, maintenance of Cooks Mill Bridge, which carries Route 220 over Carlton Stream located 50 feet north of Bog Road.

    In Unity, replacing wearing surface on Douglas Bridge, which carries Stevens Road over Sandy Stream located 270 feet south of Rich Road.

     

    Culvert and Ditching Improvements:

    In Brooks and Monroe, ditching and culvert replacement in various places on Route 139, beginning with the Winterport-Monroe town line and extending southwest 8.64 miles to Route 7.

    In Brooks, ditching on Webb Road beginning at Route 137 and extending east 4 miles to Route 139.

    In Frankfort, large culvert replacements on Loggin Road located 0.14 of a mile west of Old Stage Road.

    In Freedom, ditching and culvert replacement in various places on North Palermo Road beginning at the Palermo-Freedom town line and extending north 5.6 miles to Route 137.

    In Liberty and Montville, ditching along Route 220 beginning at Route 105 and extending north 10.16 miles to the Halldale Road.

    In Belmont and Searsmont, ditching on Route 131 beginning at the Appleton-Searsmont town line and extending northwest 6.93 miles to Route 3.

    In Montville, culvert replacement in various places on Route 220 beginning 0.43 of a mile north of Walker Ridge Road and extending 3.10 miles to the Montville-Knox town line.

    In Morrill and Waldo, ditching and culvert replacement in various places on Route 131 beginning with Higgins Hill Road and extending north 3.1 miles then east 1.1 miles to Route 137.

    In Searsmont, ditching on Route 173 beginning at Lincolnville-Searsmont town line heading north 3.1 miles then west 1.7 miles to Route 131.

    In Searsmont, replacing culverts on New England Road, Route 131 and Route 173.

    In Winterport, ditching and culvert replacement on Route 69 beginning with the Hampden-Winterport town line and extending southeast 5.75 miles to Route 1A in various places.

     

    Drainage Maintenance:

    In Northport, drainage improvements on Route 1 beginning 0.23 of a mile north of Pound Hill Road and extending north 2.7 miles.

     

    Dredging:                                                                                                                                                                           

    In Searsport, dredging the commercial channel of Searsport.

     

    Highway Paving:

    In Frankfort and Winterport, paving on Route 1A beginning 0.04 of a mile north of the Prospect town line and extending north 4.27 miles.

     

    Highway Safety and Spot Improvements:

    In Prospect, slope stabilization on Route 1 located 0.2 of a mile north of Switzer Spring Road.

    In Searsport, reconstruction on Route 1 beginning at Savage Road and extending northeast 1.85 miles.

    In Swanville, slope stabilization on Route 141 located 1.1 miles north of Town House Road.

     

    Policy, Planning and Research:

    In Prospect and Verona Island, funding supporting operating costs at the Penobscot Narrows Observatory, located on Route 1 at the Prospect- Verona Island town line.

    In Searsport, a feasibility study to evaluate the benefits of offshore wind development in an effort to establish a public-private partnership venture that will provide renewable energy and create jobs for Maine.

     

    Light Capital Paving:

    In Belfast and Swanville, light capital paving on Route 141 beginning 0.5 of a mile north of Carter Lane and extending north 4.16 miles.

    In Hope and Lincolnville, light capital paving on Route 235 beginning at Route 105 and extending northeast 3.01 miles to Route 173.

    In Liberty and surrounding towns, light capital paving on Route 220 beginning at Route 1 and extending north 15.7 miles to Route 105.

    In Palermo, light capital paving on Route 220 beginning at Route 105 and extending north 5.57 miles to Route 3.

    In Prospect, light capital paving on Route 174 beginning at Route 1A and extending north 3.82 miles to Route 1.

    In Searsmont, light capital paving on New England Road beginning at Route 131 and extending north 3.55 miles to Route 3.

    In Winterport, light capital paving on Route 69 beginning at the Newburgh town line and extending south 4.98 miles.

     

    Rail Crossing Improvements:

    In Burnham and surrounding areas, rail crossing improvements at various locations along the Pan Am Mainline.
