ROCKPORT — A sedan heading west on Route 17 in Rockport just after 9 p.m., March 20, veered off the road, hit a power pole, and flipped over backwards into a tree. The crash crumpled the vehicle, resulting in a team of Rockport firefighters extricating the driver, who was the sole occupant of the car.

Nineteen volunteer firefighters responded to find the four-door sedan had snapped the power pole approximately 15 feet up from the ground, leaving wires cascading across the scene.

Firefighters quickly extricated the male driver, and a North East Mobile Health ambulance crew transported him to Pen Bay Medical Center, in Rockport, with severe leg injuries.

Rockport Fire Chief Jason Peasley remained at the scene until 1 a.m. to assist with keeping Route 17 closed while Central Maine Power workers repaired the pole and wires.
