ROCKLAND — “His work is top notch and we’re lucky to have him,” said Rockland Fire Chief Chris Whytock.

Monday, March 9, several members of Rockland Fire and EMS who weren’t on duty that day gathered in City Chambers with those who were. In doing so, the crew assisted Rockland City Council in recognizing Lt. Mike Cole for his 20 years of service.

“I want to take this opportunity, Mike, to thank you for your service to the City, your leadership to the City,” said City Manager Tom Luttrell.

Three years ago, Cole assumed the role of fire department lieutenant, bringing to the leadership role his strong work ethic, a wealth of information in the technical aspects of the job, and an understanding of personnel requirements due to his involvement with the training committee, according to Whytock.

The role of a firefighter and EMT requires working all hours, all shifts, holidays, during storms, and away from family, said Councilor Valli Geiger

“People who are willing to do that type of work bring a level of institutional knowledge and understanding that keeps the City running,” said Councilor Ben Dorr. “We will come and go, but people that are willing to commit to something the way you are – it’s truly respectable. I can’t say enough of how I appreciate that, and that level of commitment.”

Cole’s longevity with Rockland is a testament to the quality of the Rockland Fire Department, according to Dorr.

Yet, Councilor Ed Glaser said, “In Mike’s case, I think he brings a level of excellence that the City is really quite thankful for...Everybody’s good. But sometimes somebody is even a little bit better.”
