Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse roof to be repaired
ROCKLAND — Work will begin soon to repair the slate roof of the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse, according to the City of Rockland, in a news release. The repair focus is on the roof because of recent storm damage, and the need to both secure the roof and to make it is weather tight. The project is being with help from a Save America’s Treasures grant in the amount of $125,000.
“We are truly thankful to have received this grant, which will help kick start the roof work that is sorely needed,” said City Manager Tom Luttrell. “We are grateful for the support of Senators Collins and King that brought these funds to Rockland. The Breakwater Lighthouse has become an iconic symbol for our City — and unfortunately also a clear example of the worsening effects of climate change. We look forward to shoring up this historic structure so that we can soon welcome visitors back to the lighthouse itself.”
The project is one of 59 this year funded in part by the Save America’s Treasures grant program, through the Historic Preservation Fund, as administered by the National Park Service, Department of Interior.
