Transformations

Poem: D is for Discipline

Thu, 03/26/2020 - 7:45pm

D is for discipline,

I don’t have much

except for others,

and me in a clutch,

writing is hard,

I get carried away

my emotions erupt

and water the page.

Can I get past this and

settle down,

to put into words,

put onto paper,

what I want to say

or imagine I do.

I think I can do this

it’s just so damned hard –

the telling of a story

that pierces the heart –

not with an arrow,

but a very small dart.

A story of crossroads

Transformations
We tell stories.
We tell stories to make sense of our lives.
We tell stories to communicate our experience of being alive.
We tell stories in our own distinct voice. Our own unique rhythm and tonality.

Transformations is a weekly story-telling column. The stories are written by community members who are my students. From time-to-time we will feature guest writers whom we have invited to contribute to the Transformations series.

Our stories are about family, love, loss and good times. We hope to make you laugh and cry. Maybe we will convince you to tell your stories.

"Everyone, when they get quiet, when they become desperately honest with themselves, is capable of uttering profound truths. We all derive from the same source. There is no mystery about the origin of things. We are all part of creation, all kings, all poets, all musicians; we have only to open up, only to discover what is already there." — Henry Miller

with choices to make,

like which way is best,

what path to take.

Content is essential

to guide me along

for my self and for others

to take up this song.

This song of love

and dignity too,

not just for us,

But for you and for you.
