Michael Mortell, owner of WinsMor Garage Door Company, leads a family-owned business in Belfast. The full-service Maine overhead garage door company has a long tradition in the industry, and understands what it takes to satisfy customers. He took some time recently to talk about his business.

1. How long have you been in business and at your present location?

We have operated in the Belfast area for more than seven years but the owner of WinsMor Garage Door company has over 35 years of experience in the industry. We opened our first showroom in Belfast three years ago and just relocated to a bigger and better showroom in February. This one haas complete working garage doors and electric garage door openers. One is an insulated steel raised-panel door with a LiftMaster ½ HP Chain Drive Electric Garage Door Opener, which is our advertised $799 special. and the other working model is an American Tradition Steel Carriage House door with a LiftMaster ½ HP Belt Drive Electric Opener.

We also have many other samples displaying the various styles available to view, along with a large variety of photos of the work we have done, including a video showcasing some of the many many jobs we have completed over the years.


2. Where are you from originally and where do you reside now?

I am originally from Massachusetts, where I started working with my family in the garage door business when I was 12 years old with my father, brother, brother in-law and uncle. I now live in Belfast.

3. How long does it take to install a custom garage door.

There are many factors that affect the time it takes to install a garage door. Our trucks are stocked with all the proper tools and equipment that enable us to install all of our jobs within a timely manner.

Most of our jobs are able to be completed with one or two technicians with the time frame varying, depending on the work involved. Our technicians are efficient and we have a reputation of installing or repairing your Garage Doors right the first time.

Our insulated garage doors start around $600 for a standard 8 or 9 x 7 and will go up from there depending on make, model, design and features. They include window options, R values, types of springs and tracks. Most of our doors come from the factory with eight different color options. WinsMor Garage Door Company is the only garage door company in Maine offering custom-painted garage doors in any color the customer chooses using Sherwin Williams products.

4. What's the difference (other than size) between installing a house garage door and a big structural garage door.  

A residential garage door can usually be installed by one technician because the doors are smaller, weigh less and there is less ladder work involved. Commercial doors, however, usually involve much heavier products that require two technicians, like the 26x16 garage door that was installed by us at the Belmont Boatyard or the custom aluminum all-glass garage doors we installed at Dutch Chevrolet.

5. Is the garage door opener really that important?

 Aside from the convenience of being able to get in and out of your garage with the push of a button, garage door openers save on the life of the garage door by always moving the door at one constant speed and there are added features for safety and convenience.


6. What do you mean by Custom Garage Doors?

Custom garage doors usually mean carriage house style and we have the ability to have any style door made to order based on the needs of the customer.

7. How do you like having a business in Belfast?

It's really nice having a business in Belfast that provides WinsMor Garage Door company with high visibility and exposure. We are on Route 1, which has provided us with clients all throughout the state and beyond.

8. What is the biggest change you've seen happen to Belfast?

The addition of the Front Street Shipyard, which has brought in a lot of jobs and decent wages for the people of Belfast and the surrounding areas. This has helped the local economy by supporting businesses, such as The Dockside Family restaurant and the many other small businesses in town.
