Northport man facing multiple charges following OUI arrest
BELFAST — A Northport man is facing multiple charges following a tip-off by Belfast’s McDonalds staff of a possible driver operating under the influence.
Dustin E. Barrows, 33, raised suspicions while attempting to order and pick up food at the franchise’s drive-thru window. Another witness to Barrows’ behavior told responding officers that he appeared to be “extremely intoxicated,” according to Belfast Police Sgt. Daniel Fitzpatrick.
Though he had left the scene by the time officers arrived, the witness identified Barrows as the man being sought and advised Belfast Police that he lived in Northport.
Officer Jason Couture located the reported vehicle parked in the Northport Avenue Circle K and pulled into the lot to wait for Barrows to emerge. When he did exit and enter his vehicle, he reportedly squealed his tires as he left the parking spot, at which point Couture activated his lights to initiate a traffic stop, Fitzpatrick said.
Instead of immediately stopping, Barrows drove to one of the gas pumps where he stopped the vehicle. Upon making contact with Barrows, Couture described his behavior as odd, saying he was notably fidgety and had a “glazed” look. Couture advised him that he had pulled him over for squealing his tires, but that there had been reports that he was driving while intoxicated.
Barrows initially declined Couture’s request that he complete field sobriety tests. After Couture advised him that he could easily smell alcohol on his breath, he consented and subsequently failed the tests, according to police.
Fitzpatrick said that Barrows was reportedly cooperative during his arrest and initial time at the jail, though he declined to answer any questions.
His behavior reportedly deteriorated when it came time for correctional officers to complete a pat-down, at which point he became combative.
Barrows reportedly refused staff commands causing them to be unable to re-handcuff him until assisted by Couture. In addition to handcuffs he was placed in leg shackles, and continued to fight against staff. Barrows was then moved to a restraint chair.
Once fully restrained Barrows began spitting at correctional officers, who administered a spit mask, Fitzpatrick said.
Barrows also reportedly threatened to shoot and kill one of the officers while offering specifics of how he intended to carry out the task.
Barrows has been charged with operating under the influence, operating without a license, resisting arrest or detention, assault and terrorizing.
