University of Maine Cooperative Extension has launched Tractor Safety: Foundations, a self-paced online course that provides learners with the foundational knowledge needed to operate tractors and agricultural equipment more safely and confidently.

Designed for beginning tractor operators, both youth and adult, the course expands access to critical safety training, particularly for those in regions of the state where in-person options are limited, according to the Extension, in a news release. The online format covers the same core curriculum as UMaine Extension’s 5-week in-person program, but without the hands-on driving experience. 

The Level 1: Foundations course explores tractor components, safe operating procedures, pre-operation inspections, hazard recognition, emergency preparedness and equipment connections. Through instructional videos, virtual tractor operation demonstrations, interactive activities and immersive 360° learning experiences, participants build decision-making skills to reduce risk and prevent injuries while working around tractors and agricultural equipment.

Learners not seeking U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) certification can complete their education at Level 1: Foundations. For 14- and 15-year-olds seeking full DOL certification or adult learners looking for supervised driving experience, Extension offers Level 2: Advanced. This program features a half-day practice session driving with and without attached implements, followed by a driving test. Practice sessions are planned for this fall and next spring (dates and locations TBD) to facilitate Level 2 completion and DOL certification.

Participants who successfully complete the course will also earn the Tractor Safety: Foundations micro-badge, a digital credential verified by UMaine Extension that can be shared on LinkedIn, resumes, portfolios and professional websites. The badge includes a detailed description of what participants learned and how they were evaluated, a useful feature for current and future employers. Completion of Level 1 also partially fulfills DOL requirements for youth certification through the National Safe Tractor and Machinery Operation Program.
