Midcoast 14s fall in all-star Babe Ruth district championship, state tourney up next

THOMASTON — The Midcoast 14s all-star Babe Ruth baseball team fell in the District 2 championship contest Sunday, July 9 at Thomaston’s Oceanside baseball field when Augusta squeaked by with a 2-1 victory. 

But, all is not lost for the local boys. 

Although Augusta won the district tournament, the Midcoast 14s will still represent the district since Augusta automatically earns a spot in the state tournament due to being the host site. 

Midcoast will open up the state tournament with a Friday, July 14 contest at 12:30 p.m. against Tri-County. The pool play tournament will see Midcoast challenge Portland Saturday, July 15 at 9:30 a.m., South Portland Sunday, July 16 at 11 a.m. and Augusta Sunday, July 16 at 4:30 p.m. 

The two teams with the best records will compete for the state crown Monday, July 17 at 4:30 p.m. 

All state tournament games will be held at Augusta’s McGuire Field. 

Augusta 2, Midcoast 1

Augusta’s two runs came in the first inning while Midcoast’s lone run came in the second. 

The lone repeat hitter for Augusta was Kyle Douin (single, double, run, stolen base). 

Repeat hitters for Midcoast included Joey Curtis (two singles, stolen base), Ethan Reed (single, run) and Tim Farrelly (RBI). 

On the mound for Augusta were Alia Warren (6.2 innings, one run, four hits, 10 strikeouts, one walk, one hit-by-pitch) and Bobby Stolt (0.1 innings, one strikeout, one walk). 

On the mound for Midcoast was True Crane (six innings, three hits, 11 strikeouts).
