The Lightless Lighthouse

UPDATE: Marshall Point Lighthouse is back aglow following July lightning strike

Repairs have been made, and the Marshall Point Lighthouse is back in business, as of Aug. 14.

On Thursday, July 27, at approximately 6 p.m. the Marshall Point Lighthouse tower took a direct hit by lightning through its lightning rod.

“It literally ‘fried’ the light, foghorn, and all associated circuit breakers,” said the Lighthouse publicity committee member Diane Heath. “Coast Guard Station Southwest Harbor, which is responsible for the light and foghorn, was on the scene on Monday, July 31, to assess the damage. They removed the lens light and took it to Southwest Harbor for repair or replacement. The foghorn will need further repairs.

“We are awaiting an estimated time from the Coast Guard as to when the Lighthouse will be back online. For the time being, we are the ‘Lightless Lighthouse.’”

Monday, August 7, is National Lighthouse Day. Weather permitting, Marshall Point will be opening the tower for visitors to ascend into the lens room from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

“This is a great opportunity to experience the Marshall Point Lighthouse during this unique circumstance,” said Heath.
