Louis E. Cook, obituary
UNION — Louis E. Cook, 88, of Union, passed away peacefully at his home on May 29, 2025. Louis was born on December 8, 1936, the son of Elden and Beulah Winchenbach Cook.
Louis was educated at Friendship Grammar School and was a 1954 graduate of Waldoboro High School as valedictorian of his class. Louis attended and graduated from the University of Orono with honors with a B.A. in History and later served in the U.S. Army as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Adjutant General Corps from October of 1959 to April of 1960. Louis later was a Reserve Member of the 428 Civil Affairs and Military Government Reserve Unit in Bangor.
Louis spent thirty-five plus years as a teacher at McDonough Military School in Baltimore, Thomaston High School, Union High School, and Medomak High School. While teaching at McDonough School, Louis took advanced education courses at Johns’ Hopkins University in Baltimore.
His time was spent as a social studies teacher, social studies department chairman, J.V. and Varsity baseball coach, golf coach, and assistant athletic director for several years at Medomak Valley High School. Louis was also a drivers ed instructor for many years.
Prior to coming to Medomak in 1968, Louis coached boys’ basketball and baseball at Union High and girls’ basketball and boys’ baseball at Warren High.
During his late teens and early 20’s, Louis played in the Knox-Lincoln Twilight Baseball League with both the Waldoboro Townies and the Thomaston Clippers. Louis managed the Clippers in the early 1960’s. In the late 1960’s, he was a member and President of the Knox-Lincoln-Waldo Umpires Association. For a couple of years, Louis was the acting President of the Knox-Lincoln Baseball Twilight League.
Louis enjoyed life, sports and especially riding around with his grandson Tim in “their” 2001 Corvette. He took pride in keeping his lawn mowed and would often sweep it to get the dead grass up. He enjoyed going to lunch at the Elks Club on Tuesdays and to Moody’s on Thursdays for breakfast with his friends. Everyone knew Louis had a joke or two to tell, and sometimes a little “off color”.
Louis was an avid Yankee fan and golfer. He was a member of the Goose River Golf Course for years and played regularly with a special friend, Angie Spirio.
Louis spent his later years as a member and President of the Waldoboro Lions’ Club and as a Co-Director of the Waldoboro Food Pantry.
In the past few years, Louis was on the Board of Director of the Midcoast Sports Hall of Fame. He was later inducted into the Midcoast Sports Hall of Fame in 2023, as a Midcoast Legend.
Louis was predeceased by his parents and his three sisters, Lalia, Patricia and Sandra.
Louis is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Sharon Miller Cook of Union; his daughter Michelle Burns and husband Chad of Friendship; daughter Valerie Cook and husband Angelo of Beverly, Massachusetts, and son Jeffrey Miller and wife Vicky of Union; his sister Susan Blackler of Warren; brother in-law Jamie Miller and wife Kathy of Union; grandchildren Chad, Janelle, Nicle, Jacob, Tim, Heather and Brittany. Additionally, his great grandchildren Konner, Addison, Raelynn, Nylah and little Cooper who always brought a smile to his face.

There will be a gathering of family and friends on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, from 4 - 6 p.m., at Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main Street, Waldoboro with a time of sharing beginning at 5:30 p.m. A reception will immediately follow at the Odd Fellows Hall on Route 90 in Warren.
