THOMASTON — On July 13, the Legion Riders from Post 1 in Rockland went to breakfast to support the Special Olympics.

Gary Collins, director of the Legion Riders, learned that Applebee's does a pancake and egg breakfast for $10 a person. All proceeds benefit Maine Special Olympics.

Applebees, which typically doesn't serve breakfast, opens to the public will often volunteer staff and cooks, according to Legion Riders, in a news release.

“The Riders ate a hearty breakfast, were waited on by a fantastic waitress, and had a great time,” said Riders.

After paying their bills and tipping the waitress, they asked to speak to Manager Barbara Brown, who happened to be the chef for the morning and organized the event and fundraiser. The Riders presented Brown with a check for $400, which helped send a second athlete to the Olympic.

There is a cost of $2,400 per athlete.

“Barbara was hoping to send a second athlete, and this was just about the amount she needed to reach her goal,” Riders said.
