James Culver, MD, joins Northern Lights women’s health practice
ELLSWORTH — Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital recently welcomed James Culver, MD, to its women’s health practice.
“We are extremely pleased that Dr. Culver has joined us. In a region where access to women’s care and birthing services is becoming scarce, his presence is a great addition to our highly skilled department of physicians and midwives,” said Joe Gaetano, Northern Light Maine Coast Vice President, Operations, in a news release. "Maine Coast Hospital is well-staffed to meet the healthcare needs of women in Hancock and Washington counties. And as families continue to grow in our area, we have an outstanding care team delivering babies in our brand new, modern birthing unit. This past year, we have seen a significant increase in births at our hospital, and I expect to see those numbers rise."
Growing up with a Labor and Delivery nurse mother, women’s health was familiar to him. Dr. Culver is drawn to Women’s Health by the continuity of patient care and relationships, and the mix of general patient care and surgery greatly interested him. With an undergraduate degree from Duke University, Dr. Culver completed medical school and his residency at University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. Prior to joining Northern Light Women’s Health at Maine Coast Hospital, Dr. Culver was part of a private practice in Virginia. He is currently residing with his wife in Gouldsboro.
Physicians and certified nurse-midwives offer complete gynecological services, obstetrical care, full-scope midwifery services, and well-women care. Laboring mothers are able to choose birth plans that are right for them including hydrotherapy and pain management such as nitrous oxide or epidurals in the new Dixon Family Birthing Center.
