Hazy smoke brings firefighters to Rockland nursing facility
ROCKLAND — Rockland Fire and EMS was called to 4 White Street, Wednesday, April 6, 2022, at approximately 12:20 p.m., after a hazy smoke filled the third floor of the facility. Further investigation led the firefighters to an HVAC system on the roof, where, according to Fire Chief Chris Whytock, a belt within the machinery is suspected to have become worn and emitted the smell.
HVAC fan belts made of rubber spin the fan blades that pass air throughout buildings. Over time, the belt can become weak or wear out completely. Eventually, the fan belt will overheat and create a burning rubber smell.
No evacuations took place for the Knox Center skilled nursing facility. However, due to the confirmed report of hazy smoke, the fire department activated a First Alarm, bringing Rockport and Camden fire personnel as assistance, along with two North East Mobile Health ambulances and at least one Rockland ambulance.
Though no fire was found, due to the population within the facility, the call still instigated a major endeavor, according to Whytock.
