ROCKPORT — On Wednesday, June 14, at 6 p.m., the Rockport Library will host book designer Harrah Lord for a narrated slideshow presenting her new book Steam, Sea, Stone: Creating in Icelandic Light.

“Through her striking black and white and color photographs, Lord will take the audience on a fascinating and deeply personal journey to Iceland,” said the Library, in a news release.

In the spring of 2021, when Iceland first reopened after the pandemic shut-down, a group of Americans attended a creative writing workshop with the backdrop of an erupting volcano awakened from an 800-year sleep. Lord shows how the program, blended with the primal features of this extraordinary island 2,500 miles into the Atlantic Ocean, sparked the participants' passion for storytelling. Lord's book tells their stories, includes some of their writing, and describes the dramatic and raw Icelandic land.

A resident of Rockport for 23 years, Lord has lived in New York and California and has degrees in Art History and Graphic Design. She started a successful book design business, Yellow House Studio, in 2001 and retired in 2018 after designing, producing and/or publishing over 75 books such as Where the Mountains Meet the Sea for The Camden Library, two cookbooks for The Hartstone Inn, Factory Work for the Farnsworth, as well as others for Down East Books, McGraw Hill, and Pomegranate Communications.

Steam, Sea, Stone is the first book she has authored as well as designed, following her current interests in capturing her surroundings with photography and written expression.

Refreshments will be provided at the event, and books will be available for purchase.

Lord’s book can also be purchased online at ThePoetsCorner.org.
