Eight area golfers to participate in inaugural The Maine Event tournament

MANCHESTER and OAKLAND — After scrapping the Charlie's Maine Open due to COVID-19 travel restrictions for out-of-state professional golfers earlier this year, the Maine State Golf Association realized it needed to fill a gap on the state’s golf tournament schedule.

The Maine Event was birthed as an avenue for Maine golfers to have another chance at a 36-hole event in an effort to find a champion golfer for the year.

“The difference this year is that the tournament is open to all Maine golfers, whether male or female, amateur or professional,” said the association in a news release. “With the merger of the MSGA with the two women’s amateur associations in 2018, now seemed the perfect time to run an event open to all Maine players. This year’s inaugural event features 118 players from across the state and features players of all ages, abilities, and genders. Charlie's Motor Mall of Augusta has stayed on as the title sponsor of the event, continuing its longstanding support of the MSGA.”

The tournament will be played Wednesday, Aug. 12 and Thursday, Aug. 13, with the first round at Augusta Country Club in Manchester and the second round at Waterville Country Club in Oakland.

“This year’s field features some of the top players in the state, both on the professional and amateur side of the game,” the association said. “We look forward to the first playing of this event this week at some great golf courses.”
