CUSHING — Dennis R. Young, Sr., 84, passed away peacefully on December 8, 2021.

Born March 5, 1937 in Cushing, he was the son of Walter D. and Lucy A. (Sukeforth) Young.

Dennis was a lifelong resident of Cushing and descended from a long line of fishermen that have called the area home since the 18th century. He graduated from Thomaston High School and captained the F/V Denise D. out of Pleasant Point Gut.

Dennis learned a great many things from his father (known as “Bump”) including the value of hard work. He passed these lessons down to his own children and grandchildren in large part by showing them how to lobster
and through his willingness to lend a hand. Dennis started lobstering at a young age and always loved being on the water. This included going to Stone Island with his loving wife, Janice, and fishing trips with his older brother Bill. After retiring from lobstering in his 70’s, Dennis continued to take great joy in looking out on the harbor from his porch and watching the boats come and go.

Known as “Papa” to many, Dennis was a compassionate man of great integrity. He was a dedicated and doting husband, a caring father, and a consistent positive presence in the lives of all those that were close to him. He also had a mischievous streak with a raised eyebrow and a slight grin following sly remarks, especially when trying to get a rise out of Jan.

He was proud to live on his own terms and remained independent with the help of his family, especially his daughter, Denise, and Jimmy. He will be deeply missed by all who loved him.

Dennis was predeceased by his wife, Janice (Hutchinson) Young; son, Dennis Young, Jr.; brother, William Young, and sister-in-law, Vera; and Helen Robinson.

Dennis is survived by his daughter, Denise Senay her companion and James Makie; step-children, Barbara, Nancy, and Sandra; his sister Sharon Glidden and her husband David; his grandchildren, Ethan, Michelle and her fiancé Aaron, Neal and his wife MacKenzie, Stephen and his wife Amy, Keisha, Amanda, and Mary; great-grandchildren, Aaliyah, Brantley, Evan, and Justin; and many other friends and family members, including: Ronald Young, Cynthia Staples, Terry Robinson, Sr., Terry Robinson, Jr., and Brad Yeaton.

In keeping with Mr. Young’s wishes, his family has chosen to remember his life privately.
