Arnold Richard Fish, obituary
ROCKLAND — Arnold Richard Fish, 83, passed away peacefully at home on July 19, 2025, after a long illness. He was surrounded by his beloved wife, his three sons, his grandson Tom and Tom's wife Gretchen, as well as two of his great-grandchildren, Leonard and Ellaoisse.
Born August 12, 1941, in Bath, he was the son of Leonard Jackson and Anna Feingold Fish. When he was six, his family moved to Appleton, where he lived with his paternal grandfather, George H. Fish, on the Fish Farm. It was there, alongside his beloved dog Curly, that Arnold first learned to work on cars and tend gardens, skills that would define his lifelong love of fixing and creating. He graduated as salutatorian of his class from Appleton High School at age 17.
In 1959, Arnold enlisted in the U.S. Navy alongside his friend Don Collins. After training in Illinois, he served as an aviation mechanic, famously saying he "joined the navy to be a white hat." He was discharged in June 1962.
In 1964, he met the love of his life, Evangeline Davis, and they were married that September. Arnold worked at Sears in Rockland and Augusta, then spent 11 years at FMC Marine Colloids. He later served as Warranty Manager at Wiscasset Ford for nine years before transferring to Rockland Ford as Service Manager. He finished his career as a Service Advisor at Shepherd's Toyota.
Arnold and Evangeline lived in several places throughout their life together, including Winthrop, Maine, and Monson, Massachusetts. Settling in Rockland, they purchased their home on Cottage Street, where they have lived for the past 50 years.
Arnold was known for his quick wit and great sense of humor, always ready with a quip. He was a voracious reader who could finish most chapter books in a single sitting, constantly pursuing knowledge through experience and curiosity. His grandson Tom shared this remembrance: "Gramp will be remembered for his witty remarks, unwavering work ethic, and remarkable ability to create something valuable from what others might overlook. He was a master craftsman who could fix anything. He loved creating marine-themed art and refinishing furniture."
Arnold was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was predeceased by his parents; his grandfather George H. Fish; his sister Maxine and half-brother Wayne; and his brothers-in-law Elmer Witham, Robert Davis, and Holman Davis.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Evangeline Davis Fish; his three sons, Tom (Charlene), Jeff, and Keith (Jenny); eight grandchildren; nine greatgrandchildren; his sister-in-law Sheila Witham; and a new great-grandson expected in August.
