7th Graders invited to apply for Trekkers

Thu, 01/11/2024 - 5:00pm

ROCKLAND — Trekkers invites all seventh graders that live in Rockland, Thomaston, South Thomaston, Cushing, Owls Head, and St. George to apply to join the Trekkkers program. They will hold a Community Meeting, Tuesday, January 30, at 6 p.m., in the Oceanside Middle School cafeteria, for students and families to learn about the program and all the details for applying.

Now in its 30th year, the nonprofit organization Trekkers offers youth mentoring programs to students in the Midcoast. The six-year program begins in seventh grade and lasts through twelfth grade. Each student joins a team, and they go on short weekend trips and day trips. They meet regularly to plan their longer expedition together, which may include community service, outdoor activities like hiking or canoeing, as well as learning about the environment, new cultures, and perspectives. Older high school students will also learn how to set goals and learn strategies to prepare for life after high school. Watch the video here.

Applications will be due March 1

*If the meeting time is not convenient but you still want to apply, please reach out to Brandon Leppanen, Program Director at brandon@trekkers.org or call 207-594-5095 to learn about Trekkers (and details like dues and fundraisers, what to expect, and receive the application.)

All seventh graders from Rockland, Thomaston, South Thomaston, Cushing, Owls Head, and St. George are eligible and invited to apply, regardless of financial ability. Trekkers has opportunities for families so that all students may join, regardless of ability to pay dues.
