PORTSMOUTH, N.H. — Rev. Lawrence Elmer Heard, 80, oldest son of Mr. James Elmer and Edith Elizabeth (Raye) Heard, died Dec. 13, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Clipper Harbor Center in Portsmouth, N.H.

Rev. Heard was born April 4, 1934, in Rockland. He attended elementary school in Owls Head (Ash Point) and Rockland High School, graduating in 1952. In the mid-50s, he studied for the ministry at Zion Bible Institute (now Northpoint Bible College) Haverhill, Mass.

He was an ordained minister, in good standing, with Pentecostal Assemblies of the World.

In his 60 years of ministry, Rev. Heard founded Calvary Tabernacle (now Cornerstone Ministries) in Rockland and Galilean Gospel Temple in Stonington. He also pastored several other churches throughout eastern United States.

“Capt.” Larry became a by-word upon the lips of many children through Kids Krusade, which he successfully conducted as well. Many children committed their lives to Christ through this ministry.

Retiring from active ministry in 2010, Rev. Heard resided in Portsmouth, N.H., until his passing.

He is survived by his two children, Elaine Carol (Heard) King and her husband, Joseph, of Milo, and Christopher Lawrence Heard and his wife, Patricia, of Albion; grandchildren Allyson LaPoint, and Daniel and Rachel Heard; a brother, Rev. James F. Heard and his wife, Barbara, of Ellsworth; one special cousin, Electa Ruth (Wood) Cerce and her husband, Rev. Steven Cerce of Camden; as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Special thanks is extended to the staff of Clipper Harbor for their kind, understanding and thoughtful care for Pastor Heard, as he was affectionately referred to, by the staff.

Rev. Heard's heartbeat was winning souls for Jesus Christ.

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on that Day..." (2 Timothy 4: 7, 8-NKJ).
