Douglas G. Young, obituary
THOMASTON — Douglas G. Young, 92, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2014, at Pen Bay Medical Center, after declining health.
Born in Cushing on July 8, 1922, he was the son of Hibbard and Edith Grafton Young. He grew up on the family farm, attended local schools and was a 1940 graduate of Thomaston High School. That fall Doug began studies at Becker Business College, where he earned a degree in business administration.
Dec. 1, 1942, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served during World War II, primarily stationed at Falmouth, England.
Following his discharge from military duty Doug returned to Cushing, where he began his career as a sawyer. He began a portable sawmill operation and sawed lumber on-site for many area homes.
In the early 1960s, he established a permanent location for that lumber operation on Spear Mill Road in Cushing, where he operated from until retiring in 1992.
He met his soul mate, Marjorie A. Noyes, at a dance at Oakland Park in Rockport, and on June 28, 1947, Doug married Marjorie in Rockland in a small ceremony. Throughout their more than 67 years of marriage, the Youngs enjoyed dancing, where most Saturday nights they could be found at area dance venues and were recognized as a beautiful dance team.
Since retiring, with his wife, Doug has enjoyed traveling around the United States, to the Caribbean and three times to Europe. Doug was meticulous in the care of his home, lawn and gardens, where the couple could be found sitting on their porch daily together enjoying neighborhood friends stopping by to visit.
He served one term as selectman for the Town of Thomaston and was a long-time member of the Thomaston Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, Doug was predeceased by two brothers, James and Wendell Young.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Marjorie of Thomaston; one son, Brad Young and his wife, Janie, of Cumberland; one daughter, Noreen Libby and her husband, David, of St. George; four grandchildren, Caleb Hall, Jarod Hall, Carolyn Young and Elise Young-Marine; and three great-grandchildren, Hannah Hall, Curtis Hall and Michael Hall; as well as several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held Monday, Oct. 6 at 2 p.m. at Thomaston Baptist Church on Main Street in Thomaston. Private interment will be in Village Cemetery on Dwight Street in Thomaston.
Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Pope Memorial Humane Society of Knox County, P.O. Box 1294, Rockland, ME 04841.
The Young family wishes to thank the professional caregivers at Pen Bay Medical Center, who made this difficult time easier, especially Sarah Dwelley.
