CAMDEN — A 7-year-old Camden girl crossing Turnpike Drive (Route 52) from a neighbor’s house to her house ran into the road as a car was passing by, colliding with it, according to Camden Police Officer John Tooley.

Mia Davis sustained a contusion, or bruise, to the head, abrasions on her arms and a small cut on her arm. Tooley said it did not appear that she broke any bones.

The accident occurred around 4:30 p.m., with Camden Fire Department and two North East Mobile Health Service ambulances responding to the scene.

Davis was returning from a neighbor’s house with her 13-year-old brother, Alex, when the accident occurred. Tooley said the children were standing on the side of the road, waiting to cross, when Patrick Mahan, 51, of Virginia Beach, Va., crested the hill on Turnpike Drive, heading toward Camden, and started approaching them.

“Mia and Alex were on the Beveridge Farm side of the street and were going to cross to their home. Mia went cross and Alex grabbed her arm, as he saw the car, but she didn’t stop,” said Tooley. “Patrick had slowed down when he came over the hill, and saw the children, and then all of a sudden Mia went to cross and ran into the  car.”

Mahan was driving a 2011 Honda sedan. Tooley said he could see where the little girl impacted with the car, damaging the passenger side mirror and leaving an impact mark on the side of the car. Tooley also said that Alex described the impact as his sister impacting with the front of the car, coming up over the hood and pulling the mirror down as she came back down over the side of the car, landing back on the road.

Tooley said Mahan swerved left to try and avoid hitting the girl, but collided with her somewhere near the center of the road.

“She was really lucky. Had she gotten directly in front of the car, this would be a very different outcome for her,” said Tooley. “In any case, it was very scary for everyone involved.”
