Two teens charged in Oceanside softball dugout arson fire
THOMASTON — June 15 was a day of celebration for many people, as fathers were celebrated on Father’s Day. The Camden National Bank Little League softball team celebrated winning the 2014 Five Towns league title Sunday, however, not everyone was celebrating into the evening.
One of the Oceanside High School softball dugouts was destroyed in a fire in the early evening hours of June 15. Thomaston Asst. Fire Chief Jamie Leo said, “We got the call around 5 p.m. and were there within minutes of receiving the call.”
Two juveniles have been charged with arson in the incident, according to Sgt. Joel Davis with the Maine Fire Marshal’s Office. Davis said Monday that the juveniles were boys and were 15 years old and 13 years old, respectively. The two boys were each charged with one count of arson and have been released to their parents until their juvenile court date, Davis said.
According to Leo, two fire engines, an ambulance and a total of roughly a dozen personnel responded to the scene of the fire Sunday evening. Nobody was hurt in the fire.
Leo also said that he, and several others, were at the scene until around 8:30 p.m. and were accompanied by the Fire Marshal’s investigator. Leo said that because his team could not pinpoint a cause of the fire, and it was believed there might have been some “human involvement,” the state investigator was called to assist.
Leo added that when his team deemed there might have been some human involvement, it simply meant that an electrical fire, or something along those lines, was not the cause; therefore, Davis was called in to investigate.
The dugout will not be able to be salvaged and will have to be torn down, once the scene has been processed by officials.
The dugout was one of the very few remaining artifacts from Georges Valley High School, which consolidated with Rockland District High School to form Oceanside High School. The dugout has hosted teams that went on to be crowned state champions in 2007 and 2008 (Georges Valley) and 2013 (Oceanside).
Leo had not received any notice stating how much the damages to the dugout would cost.
The dugout, and field, was scheduled to be the site of the 2014 Busline League softball championship game on Tuesday, June 17, which would feature Oceanside’s seventh-grade and eighth-grade teams. Confirmation on where the game would be moved to was not immediately available, however, the game will likely be moved to the Thomaston Grammar School field, site of many Busline League games this season.
