Taking of property is not the Maine way
On May 17, Karen Grove wrote a letter to the editor, “The taking of private property is not the Maine way of living.” I wanted to know more about what prompted her to write the letter so I went over to her house where she invited me in for tea. We had a wonderful conversation in which she explained that she was confused by statements she’d heard or read related to “them” taking property from river abutters to extend the Riverwalk.
I want to assure waterfront owners and any residents that there are no plans afoot to take any property from anyone. All sections of the Riverwalk have either been built on town owned property or across property where the owners have agreed to allow for an easement. This will be the same process when the town considers building future sections of the Riverwalk.
In the end, I agree with Karen that the taking of property is not the Maine way, and there are no plans in Camden to change that.
