Trio of Midcoast athletes honored by UNE for academic achievements
BIDDEFORD — A whopping 325 student-athletes at the University of New England in Biddeford, including three Midcoast natives, were slated to be honored for their academic achievements this school year at the university’s Student-Athletic Academic Success Ceremony.
Each of the student-athletes that would have been honored at the ceremony, which was canceled due to the ongoing pandemic, earned a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
Among the locals that would have been honored were field hockey player Reanna Boulay (junior), football player Joe Berger (junior) and men’s ice hockey player Jamey Zanca (sophomore).
Boulay is a Liberty native and alumna of Mount View High School majoring in health, wellness, and occupational studies.
Berger is an applied exercise science major from Rockland and is an alumnus of Oceanside High School.
Zanca studied at Camden Hills Regional High School and Stanstead College in Quebec, Canada. He is a medical biology major and a Camden native.
The list of 2020 honorees accounts for 68 percent of the university’s student-athletes in the 2019-20 academic year, according to a news release.
“UNE is committed to academic excellence with the purpose of preparing its students for meaningful and rewarding careers, lifelong learning, and enlightened lives,” the release read. “The University's intercollegiate athletics program promotes optimal physical, emotional, and personal development in its student-athletes, supplements the classroom experience, and provides balance to academic life.”
