Mark Jones to be inducted into Saint Joseph’s College Athletics Hall of Fame
STANDISH — Four alumni from Saint Joseph’s College in Standish will be inducted into the Saint Joseph’s College Athletics Hall of Fame as part of the 18th Class to join the Hall.
Among those four Monks will be Waldoboro native Mark Jones.
Jones, who graduated from Medomak Valley High School, is “regarded as one of the finest point guards to ever suit up for the Saint Joseph's men's basketball program,” according to a news release.
Jones, who graduated from SJC in 1985, tallied 1,1101 points through 109 games and finished as the school’s all-time leader in free-throw percentage (77.3%) assists (548) and steals (259).
Upon his induction 35 years later, he remains second in team history in assists, third in assists average (5.0 APG), fourth in steals, sixth in steals average (2.4 SPG), 10th in free-throw efficiency, and 14th in free throws made (299), according to the release.
Jones helped lead St. Joe's to three-consecutive Western Maine Athletic Conference Championships (1983-85) and an 80-31 (.721) cumulative record during his four years on the hardwood, per the release.
He garnered All-Conference honors, the release noted, after averaging 11.3 points and 7.7 assists per game during the 1982-83 season.
Jones, who earned his bachelor’s degree in environmental science, was honored as the 1985 Maine Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Joining Jones in the 2020 Hall of Fame Class will be South Portland native Abbie Rice, Portland’s Meaghan Johnson and Biddeford’s Hannah Gajewski.
The induction ceremony is slated for Saturday, Sept. 12.
The evening begins at 5 p.m. with a plaque-revealing reception and is followed by dinner and the induction ceremony.
With the addition of the 2020 honorees, the list of accomplished athletes, teams, coaches, administrators and philanthropists inducted in the SJC Athletics Hall of Fame grows to 97.
