Morning hike, noontime gathering, evening Community Supper

Rockport to join Maine in daylong celebration of 200-year statehood

Thu, 02/20/2020 - 7:00pm

On March 15, and across the State of Maine, celebrations of the state’s 200th anniversary of its statehood will take place in cities and in towns. Rockport is no exception, and will host events beginning at 9 a.m. atop Beech Hill and culminating with a Community Supper at the Rockport Opera House.

Legacy Rockport, the nonprofit whose mission is to help enhance life for the Rockport community, is planning a series of events. They include:

9 to 11 a.m., a morning community walk to the top of Beech Hill for coffee and visiting with friends inside Beech Nut, beside a warm fire.

Noon: A lunch at the Masonic Hall cohosted by the Masons and the Simonton Corner Community Hall Association. After lunch, go across the street and take a tour of historic Simonton Corner Community Hall, which is currently getting renovated for the public to enjoy as a gathering place, dance hall, and meeting hall.

4:30 to 8 p.m., a Community Supper and Bicentennial gathering at the Rockport Opera House. Cafe Miranda will cater a special historic supper, with a menu reflecting what citizens enjoyed in 1820, and prepared in the sumptuous manner for which Cafe Miranda is renowned.

The evening will include speakers who will illustrate Rockport’s important role in the history of the state, as well as a focus on how the Native Americans and settlers survived in the local landscape on Penobscot Bay.

The day will be fun, and a worthwhile opportunity for Rockport citizens to know their town even better, its place in history and its potential for the future.

Tickets for the Community Supper will be available at the town office. The cost is $25 per person, and folks who want to donate to the day’s event are encouraged to buy tickets at the full price of the dinner, which is $45 per person. In other words: Donations are accepted with appreciation!
