SEARSPORT — Take your children to Carver Memorial Library on Take Your Child to the Library Day to share the joy of reading. Bring the children back on Tuesdays so they can pass their joy along to Commander, the service dog who welcomes being read to. In between, celebrate Valentine’s Day with a craft and a performance, before settling in to an author talk with an outdoor adventurist.

“To Fall in Love” Reading
Wednesday, February 12, 6 p.m.
Cold Comfort Theater brings this intimate reading to Carver Memorial Library the week of Valentine's Day! All are welcome to hear this wonderful new story by written by Jennifer Lane and directed by Maggie Goscinski.
Scientists claim that there are 36 questions you can ask to fall in love with anyone, coupled with four minutes of uninterrupted eye contact. But can this exercise save a marriage, splintered by a horrible accident?  “A wonderfully simple play that deals with the complexities relationships face during times of grief. The playwright does an excellent job asking questions in a natural way that encourages the audience to gage their own feelings on particular "what ifs".” -Alex Burkart. Free and open to the public.
 
Musical Instrument Introductions

Show and tell with our Musical Instrument Lending Library. Jim Hyland and other local musicians will talk about the instruments, do demos and help you go hands on to give them a try.

Author Visit: John Holyoke

John Holyoke will read from and discuss his new book Evergreens, a collection of Maine outdoor stories.

There is nothing that outdoors columnist John Holyoke loves more than a good story. In his first book, Evergreens, Holyoke shares a curated collection of his favorite essays featuring people who are passionate about the outdoors, as well as his memorable encounters with creatures—from salmon to deer to moose to squirrels—that fascinate and confound him. Sprinkled throughout are memories of the events that have shaped him as he recounts the benefits of spending time with friends in the woods, fields, and waters of Maine. As Holyoke says, “I am here to take you on an adventure. Along the way, you’re welcome to laugh, or cry, or smile, or reach for the phone to call an old friend and tell them that they still matter.”

John Holyoke is an award-winning journalist who has been entertaining and informing readers of the Bangor Daily News for 27 years. His natural curiosity has helped make him a master of the “people story,” and his job as outdoor editor of the BDN has allowed him to travel to some of the state’s most special places in search of experiences to savor and tales to share. John grew up in Brewer, graduated from the University of Maine in Orono, and has been writing for newspapers since sixth grade, when his teacher challenged him to start a school paper if he thought it was needed. John is an avid hunter and fly fisherman, and loves spending time at the family camp on Beech Hill Pond in Otis, Maine. He lives in Brewer with his wife, Karen, his three stepchildren, two dogs and a cat. 
 
Paws to Read with Commander, a Service Dog
Tuesdays from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Service dog Commander and his handler Andrea will be at the library so children can practice reading aloud to him, and he can spend time with library visitors.
 
Crafternoons – Thursdays at 3:30 p.m.
Crafts and socializing. Bring knitting, craft projects, or mending for conversation, questions, and new friends. Drop in any week.
