ROCKLAND — The Sail Power and Steam Museum of Rockland has recently added three new board members as well as a new associate director.

“Having been in existence for over 10 years now,” said Jim Sharp, founder and Board Chair, in a news release, “the museum is entering an exciting phase of planning for our future. Adding people with extensive financial, non-profit, and marketing experience will be key in building on our mission of enriching lives through hands-on, interactive and educational experiences while preserving and telling the stories of the rich heritage of sail, power, and steam driven vessels along the coast of Maine and beyond.”

A site to visit for tourists and locals alike, the museum continues to expand its collection of unique items associated with Rockland and the Maine coastal heritage and culture. Adding to their boat collection allowed them to begin the Midcoast Sailing Center last year, and they continue to support the local music scene by hosting series such as the year-round Sunday MusicJams and summer Folk Music concerts.

Joining the board are George Orestis, of Camden, Tom Marshall, of Rockland, and Peter Whitman, of Kittery Point. Robin McIntosh of Camden joined the museum as associate director in October.

George Orestis, of Camden, a board certified and licensed occupational therapy assistant, has lifelong experiences in boating and waterfront management. With over 20 years of voluntary nonprofit Board participation, Orestis was a trustee of the Kennebec Valley Community College (KVCC), Kennebec Valley Foundation Board of Trustees, has served as the Alumni Board Chair, and was a member of the OTA Program Board. He has held multiple offices and positions in the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, including flotilla commander and seamanship instructor. He formerly served as assistant harbormaster for the Town of Camden.

Tom Marshall moved to Rockland from New Jersey two years ago. Marshall is presently employed by the University of Maine at Augusta as an adjunct professor in the business department. Prior to coming to Maine, Marshall was a vice president with Fulton Bank NA for 10 years in the Commercial Lending Division, and a senior development manager in Enterprise Product Marketing with the AT&T companies for 25 years. Recently, Marshall was appointed as trustee to the Rockland Port District.

Peter Whitman of Kittery Point is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire and Harvard’s Graduate School of Design Professional Development Series in Real Estate Development. Whitman’s career focused on entrepreneurial management and real estate development, and he has just begun work at the Landing School in Arundel as chief financial officer. He has extensive board experience and helped to form the Friends of the Wentworth, working to save this historically significant New Hampshire hotel. He has worked in real estate development with companies such as Ocean Properties (owner of the Samoset Hotel and the largest family owned hotel company in the country) and on his own. He has served on boards such as: Citizens Scholarship Foundation (Dollars for Scholars); Ocean Research and Educational Society; Seacoast Community Healthcare; Kittery Land Trust; Workforce Housing Coalition; Long Creek Watershed; and Kittery Port Authority 

Robin McIntosh, of Camden, is a long-time Midcoast resident. She has worked as development director at the Penobscot Bay Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Island Institute, worked in membership development at Hurricane Island Outward Bound School, served as marketing manager at Portsmouth Regional Hospital in Portsmouth, NH; and is program facilitator for Midcoast Leadership Academy. She is a graduate of the University of Maine, Leadership Maine, Leadership Seacoast, and Midcoast Leadership Academy. An active community volunteer, she currently serves on Camden’s Budget Committee and Camden’s Economic and Community Development Advisory Board. She has also served on Rockland’s Economic Development Advisory Board, was a member of Rockland Maine Street, Inc.’s Economic Restructuring Committee, as well as a number of local boards and committees.
