ROCKLAND — Vera Roberts, president of the board of directors of New Hope for Women, has announced the addition of Shelley Megquier and Sarah Robbins to its board.

New Hope for Women (NHFW) offers support to people in Waldo, Knox, Lincoln, and Sagadahoc counties affected by domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking.

Shelley Megquier, a resident of Belfast, joins the New Hope for Women Board of Directors with a rich background in gender and development work, both internationally and in the United States, including work at one of Maine’s domestic violence agencies. She’s currently a senior policy advisor at Population Reference Bureau (PRB), a Washington D.C. based non-governmental organization.

“Domestic abuse and, more broadly, gender-based violence is one of the largest public health threats facing Maine and perhaps the most common human rights violation occurring in homes and communities worldwide and on a daily basis,” said Megquier, in a news release. “I joined the NHFW Board to contribute my energy and skills in support of the organization’s ongoing efforts to end domestic abuse and make our communities safer.”

Sarah Robbins, a resident of Lisbon who was born and raised in Sagadahoc County, is a business support analyst for Milton CAT, where she is responsible for analyzing and improving business processes by leveraging technology. As a survivor of domestic violence, Robbins recognizes that domestic violence is a complex issue and is passionate about educating community members, survivors, and loved ones about the warning signs.

“Domestic violence impacts people all around us so it’s important for everyone to be prepared to aid a loved one, family member, or colleague,” said Robbins, in the release. “I am driven to helping reduce stigma for those seeking assistance while partnering with organizations to create cultures and environments to ensure that every survivor has the support they need.”
