Thomaston Fourth of July celebration invites parade participants and festivity volunteers

Tue, 06/26/2018 - 12:30pm

The Thomaston 4th of July Committee voted between three slogans based on the theme of education and teaching for the 2018 parade theme, and this year it is "Learning, it's a Lifelong Journey.”

The Committee had a hard time choosing between:

1) Learning is a Blast!
2) “You can never be overdressed or over educated!”  - Oscar Wilde
3) Learning, it's a Lifelong Journey!
All of these slogans make possible float ideas.

The committee also considered some words of wisdom from Ben Franklin on the importance of education: "An investment in knowledge pays the best interest."; and "An education is the investment with the greatest returns."

Community members are encouraged to start planning their parade participation now. Communities building floats together gives people a chance to come together for a common goal, have some fun, and be part of a larger community event.

"Working together on a project is a wonderful way to spend time with friends and neighbors and meet new people," said Chris Winters, committee chairman, in a news release. "And, we will be awarding prizes for the 'most imaginative', 'most humorous', 'most like the theme', and 'best overall', floats.”

The Committee also seeks volunteers to help put on the festivities. The celebration requires time and money to be successful. Julie Brooks, who is coordinating the committee booth and bouncy houses, explains that manning the event takes dozens of volunteers working 2 hour shifts. "And, we need volunteers to sell flags along the parade route and collect donations at the main entry points for the fireworks." She adds that these are perfect opportunities for  participation by volunteer teams from businesses.

There are still spaces in the craft tent, according to tent coordinator Catinka Knoth.

"We especially want crafts such as baskets, fudge, and jams," she said. Contact Knoth at info@catinkacards.com.

Vendor coordinator, Brooks Stevens, says there are still vendor spaces available on the grounds. Details and applications are on the website,www.thomaston4thofjuly.com or contact info@thomaston4thofjuly.com with your general inquiries.
