ROCKLAND — Barbara “Barb” Jean Guy, 59, wife of Dwayne Guy, passed away on Friday, April 13, 2018, at Eastern Maine Medical Center following complications of pneumonia.  Her family was by her side when she departed to start her new journey. 

Barb was born the second child of Sylvio Beaulieu and Gertrude (Peggy) neé Murphy on January 23, 1959 in Fort Fairfield, Maine.  She grew up surrounded by family (lots and lots of family) and potato fields.  All of you that were close enough to be in on her personal jokes know that during the fall time she never failed to stop and “sniff” the air because she swore she could smell the potatoes.  She recently began claiming she missed the good ole days of picking potatoes but we have a feeling she just forgot how much she actually hated it when she was a kid. 

Barb graduated in June 1977 from Fort Fairfield High School and in August married Dwayne Guy, one of the few residents of Fort Fairfield at that time that wasn’t one of her relatives.  Dwayne was in the Marine Corps so the newlyweds moved to Virginia - quite the culture shock for Barb, the biggest place she had ventured to prior to this was Bangor to go shopping.  

Barb and Dwayne recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary with a cruise joined by several Elk friends to Bermuda.  Some of their friends even got to witness the pictures Barb would share of Dwayne’s awesome fashion sense during this trip.  Let’s just say, she was brave to venture out in public with him looking like that or, she really loved him. 

Barb was a Civil Service employee for 32 years, working in Arlington, VA, Seattle, WA and Bangor, ME before settling in Rockland, ME in 1987.  She knew just about everyone in Rockland due to many years manning the front desk at the Social Security office.  This made it very hard for her kids to do anything in town without someone telling her.  She retired in 2012 but continued to work there part time (in addition to picking up two additional part time jobs because obviously retirement was totally her calling) because she just couldn’t say no - well, except to her husband and kids from time to time but never the grandkids. 

Barb held several different names and titles over the years.  Some called her Barb, Barbie (which she hated), Barbarosa (even we don’t understand that one).  But her favorite names were Mom and Nana.  She was involved in Girl Scouts as troop leaders for both her daughters for years.  Once her girls were done she continued volunteering as Cookie Cupboard and Service Team Leader.  She was a member and officer of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.  She was involved with the Rockland Emblem Club where she held the role of not only President but was also the President for the State of Maine.  The connection she held dear to her heart, which brought her many new friends over the years, was B. P. O. Elks.  We were so incredibly proud of her these past two years for holding the title of Lodge President and also the first female at the Rockland Lodge to do so.  On the state level she gave all her heart and time as the chairman of MCCP (Maine Children’s Cancer Program).

Barb was preceded in death by both her father, Sylvio and her mother, Gertrude.  She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Dwayne of Rockland; her children, Charlene and husband Jason Hall of Bourne MA, Andrea and her partner Jason (not the same Jason as Charlene’s that's just gross) Tower of Rockland, Shawn and his partner Ashley Webster of Bowdoinham; grandchildren Emily, Mia, Garrett, Jordan, Jasmine, Kennedy, Jayla and Caleb; brother Gerry Beaulieu of Fort Fairfield; special cousins Theresa and Freida “Shu” Saucier of Fort Fairfield, as well as extended family and too many special friends to list.  

Barb was the most generous person one would ever meet.  She would give you her last dollar if you needed it, as long as she was done playing the pull tickets.  With that in mind, the family has asked that in lieu of flowers (if you knew Barb well you know she thought flowers were an unnecessary use of money) please make donations to the cause she held near and dear to her heart: Maine Children’s Cancer Program at Maine Medical Center, Philanthropy Office, Attn: Maine Children’s Cancer Program, 22 Bramhall St., Portland, ME 04102.
