Waldo district Scouts to honor Larry Jones during Golden Eagle Award Dinner

BELFAST — Larry Jones will be the honoree at the eleventh annual Golden Eagle dinner on Thursday, May 16, at the Belfast Yacht Club and Event center, 15 Front Street, Belfast.

The event, starting at 5:30 p.m., “honors an outstanding community member who has done great things to make the area a better place to live,” says Golden Eagle Dinner chairperson Jim Robbins of Searsmont, in a news release.

“Larry, an Eagle Scout himself, is the founder and former owner of Whitecap Builders in Belfast and is well known for his many philanthropic projects,” said Robbins. “He and his wife, Sharon, donated land to build the Waldo County Y, and Larry saw the Y’s construction through as clerk of the works. He has also worked on many home building projects for Habitat for Humanity, and recently spent six months helping the island nation of the Bahamas recover from destructive hurricanes and flooding.

“This special event is one of the Katahdin Area Council’s premier fund raising events of the year,” said Robbins.

Last year, the Golden Eagle Dinner’s attendees, their businesses and their guests raised more than $35,000 in sponsorships for the local Boy Scouts’ programs. Again this year, all those attending will be dinner sponsors, providing tax-deductible support of between $2,000 and $185.

The Golden Eagle Dinner leadership this year includes Jim Robbins, former president of Robbins Lumber as chair, the group includes Dorothy Alling, Chris Aspinall, Greg Dutch, Chris Eldridge, the Belfast Chamber’s Dorothy Havey, Chuck Major, Greg Morin, Randy Reischer, former state Senate leader Mike Thibodeau, the YMCA’s Russell Werkman and Patrick Chamberlin of Allen Insurance and Financial.
