Vinalhaven man accused of stealing truck in Thomaston, using it to steal metal from Winterport Fire Department
WINTERPORT – A Vinalhaven man is in Waldo County Jail awaiting a hearing before a judge after he allegedly stole a truck from a Thomaston repair shop and drove it on a suspended license to Winterport, where Winterport firefighters discovered he was stealing metal that belonged to their department.
Waldo County Sheriff's Deputy Jonathan Shaw responded to the Winterport Fire Station at around 1 p.m. Sunday, after receiving a complaint about a suspicious truck parked there.
Shaw responded and met with several members of the fire department, and learned that the truck was found with the doors open and metal in the rear bed that belonged to the fire department.
The owner of the vehicle was contacted, and according to a press release, they told Shaw the vehicle was at a shop in Thomaston for transmission repairs.
"She was unaware that her vehicle was missing," said Shaw.
Thomaston Police Sgt. Tim Hoppe was able to determine that the truck had in fact been stolen from the repair shop on the prior evening, according to the release.
A suspect was allegedly "developed on scene" who was identified as Owen Adair, 23, of Vinalhaven. He was interviewed regarding his connection to the truck and several witnesses were also interviewed.
Shaw said following his investigation, which also determined that Adair's driver's license was currently suspected, that he was on bail out of Knox County and that he was in possession of burglar tools, he arrested Adair.
Adair was charged with violation of conditions of release, operating after suspension, theft by unauthorized taking and receiving stolen property. Bail was set at $1,000 cash, but a motion to revoke the underlying bail was initiated by the District Attorney's Office and approved, and Adair is being held without bail.
