Two Camden weekend crashes attributed to alcohol
CAMDEN — A woman driving into Camden late at night May 31 failed to negotiate a turn in the road and crashed into stone steps and a tree stump. The car was wrecked and the driver was transported by ambulance to Pen Bay Medical Center with nonthreatening injuries, police said.
According to Camden Police Lt. Mike Geary, the crash occurred at approximately 11:30 p.m. Friday night when Lacie Yates, 27, of Rockport was heading south along Route 1.
At the intersection of routes 1 (High Street) and 52 (Mountain Street) near the Camden Public Library, she did not follow the curve of the Route 1; instead, her 2004 Toyota sedan went off the road there, struck stones and stairs near a house, and traveled up the embankment before coming to a rest.
“She just went straight,” said Geary.
Witnesses reported hearing a car go by at high speed, then hard braking, and a loud thump as the car hit the stairs.
North East Mobile Health Services responded, taking Yates to the hospital. The Toyota was considered a total loss.
Yates was subsequently charged with operating under the influence, and police attributed the crash to alcohol and speeding. There were no passengers in the vehicle.
At 4:41 a.m. the following morning, June 1, Camden police responded to another crash, this time on Gould Street.
There, they found a Subaru on its side on the lawn of 13 Gould Street, with the driver, Kyle Upton, outside of it, walking around.
Upton, 31, of Camden, was charged with OUI, his second such offense.
More details will be forthcoming, pending completion of the police report.
