Truck driver arrested following Camden crash
CAMDEN — A Philadelphia truck driver remains at the Knox County Jail in Rockland today following a crash May 1 on Route 1 at the intersection of Hannaford Plaza in Camden. His truck is parked further along the highway at a Dos Amigos restaurant lot in Belfast, near to where it had been pulled over by Waldo County Sheriff’s deputies.
The crash occurred at approximately 1:15 p.m. Thursday afternoon, as Peter and Margaret Reilly, of Belfast, were driving north on Route 1 close to the intersection and stoplight. As the stoplight was changing to red, Peter, 73, who was driving a 2005 Toyota Corolla, slowed down with traffic. That’s when the 2007 Freightliner, traveling north behind the Reillys, jackknifed, turned and collided with the sedan.
Falikou Donzo, 29, of Philadelphia, was driving the truck, “at a high rate of speed, according to witnesses,” said Camden Police Detective Curt Andrick.
As he attempted to brake, Donzo failed to retain control of his truck, said Andrick.
The truck, registered to Lasana Sanoe, of Darby, Penn., was loaded with plants, and Donzo was traveling north on Route 1 to an unidentified delivery point, Andrick said.
After the crash, Donzo regained control of the truck and continued through the intersection. Meanwhile, Camden Fire Department and North East Mobile Services tended to the Reillys, who were uninjured.
Camden police alerted neighboring law enforcement agencies about the crash, and Waldo County Sheriff deputies stopped Donzo near Bayside store in Northport. Andrick drove to Northport, and contacted the Maine State Police commercial unit, whose officers conducted a full inspection of the vehicle.
“They found numerous safety violations,” said Andrick. “The truck was taken off the road and parked at Dos Amigos.”
Waldo County deputies then arrested Donzo and charged him with failure to report an accident by the quickest means, leaving the scene of an accident, driving to endanger, and operating a defective motor vehicle.
Donzo was transported to Knox County Jail and is expected to appear in court this afternoon.
Camden Exxon towed the Reillys’ car to the Camden garage.
