Truck crash put lights out for Botanical Gardens

On Sunday, Dec. 3, just after opening its doors to the first round of light-gazing, Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, home of the famed Gardens Aglow, lost power. Up the road from the Gardens on Barters Island Road, a 2005 Chevrolet pickup truck veered off the road, smashing into a utility pole and sending live wires to the ground.

Lincoln County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Rand Maker said deputies responded to the crash around 4:25 p.m. after receiving a call. Maker said the preliminary report revealed driver Adam Reinecke of Boothbay Harbor became distracted while negotiating a sharp left hand corner just east of the Gardens entrance. “… Mr. Reinecke was uninjured as a result of the crash, (though) it is unknown at this time if (he) was wearing his seat belt.”

The outage spanned most of Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor. Barters Island Road was closed while responders cleared the wires from the road to make way for repair crews. Deputies arrested Reinecke, 29, for operating under the influence.

During the crash investigation deputies found probable cause to arrest Mr. Reinecke,” Maker said. Reinecke was transported to Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset, processed and released to jail staff with a court date of Jan. 25, Maker said.
