report tree conditions, varieties, stumps; solicit locations for new trees

Tree Volunteers for Camden aims to repopulate its trees, seeks additional volunteers

Tree Volunteers for Camden, a group of Camden citizens, are moving forward with an initiative to repopulate the town with trees, and increase the number of trees planted annually. The group is looking for volunteers to help with the effort.

The Tree Volunteers issued the following, Dec. 7:

Evergreens are having their moment as we prepare for the holidays. For many of us, this means bringing a beautiful conifer inside to be festooned with lights and ornaments. Although summer feels a long way off in the dark months, and it can be easy to forget the bright hot July sun, please remember the trees that gave us shade though they slumber now, leafless in the winds.

Camden is a beloved place in all seasons, and we pride ourselves on being a walking town. Sadly, we stroll down streets with fewer and fewer trees each year. It doesn't have to be a barren futurescape, but we have to act now, as with so many issues related to a changing climate. Camden's trees are aging and not being replaced at a rate fast enough to provide the urban shade canopy we need. Perhaps you've noticed the two young Ginkgo trees planted this fall on the new downtown sidewalk. We hope these two will be the first of many new tree plantings throughout the village. We are organizing an effort to repopulate and increase the number of trees planted each year  and looking for like-minded volunteers interested in Camden's street trees to join us

There are several ways to contribute, without heavy lifting or planting! Street captains would report their street's trees condition, varieties, stumps, and solicit locations for new trees. You need not be a professional, and we are all learning as we go along. You'll meet some new faces and pass the winter talking about nature and trees!

Do join us in our effort to help our beautiful village and lovely tree-lined streets age well into the future we plan for now? For more information, please contact: beedyparker@gwi.net, 236-8732
