Three seriously injured in Route 17 head-on crash in Washington
WASHINGTON — A head-on crash on Route 17 in Washington late Friday morning caused serious injuries to the two drivers and a passenger.
Knox County Chief Deputy Tim Carroll said that the accident occurred around 11 a.m. May 23, just east of the Lincoln County line. He said the area of the crash in a straight stretch of road.
Witness accounts were that a 2011 Chevrolet Impala, being driven by David St. Pierre, 64, of Lewiston, was traveling east on Route 17 and being operated erratically. St. Pierre's car "suddenly" and inexplicably crossed the centerline and crashed head-on into a 2000 Nissan Xterra.
The Xterra was being driven by Jeremy Sawyer, 35, of Rockport. Sawyer's passenger was 18-year-old Ashley Glover of Waldoboro.
St. Pierre, Sawyer and Glover all sustained serious, though non-life-threatening injuries, according to Carroll. All three were taken to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport. Sawyer was then taken by ambulance to Eastern Maine Medical Center, and Glover was transferred to EMMC by a Lifeflight of Maine helicopter.
Carroll said that St. Pierre was also due to be transferred to a trauma center in Maine.
"It is unknown at this time why St. Pierre crossed the centerline," said Carroll. "The crash is still under investigation."
