On Monday, August 24, Maine Public will be at the Gracie Theatre in Bangor for a special screening of an upcoming documentary called Crime and Punishment in America. The series is produced by filmmaker Lynn Novick and executive produced by Ken Burns and Sam Pollard. 

Novick will be on hand to introduce the project and then to serve as a panelist on a post-viewing discussion with Maine Department of Corrections Commissioner Randall Liberty and Maine Public’s Deputy News Director Susan Sharon. Jennifer Rooks will serve as the moderator of the discussion and field questions from the audience. 

Crime and Punishment in America is the first documentary series to tell the story of criminal justice in America from the colonial era to today, according to Maine Public, in a news release, and explores how for more than 250 years, Americans have wrestled with the problem of crime, the purpose of punishment and the meaning of justice.
