Ruth Freeman Lucas, obituary

ROCKLAND — Ruth Evelyn Freeman Lucas, 98, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Monday, March 25, 2024. Born in Camden, September 19, 1925, she was the daughter of Ronald and Gertrude Mutch Freeman.

Ruth attended grade school on Knowlton Street in Camden and later graduated from Camden High School in 1944. Just one month after graduation, Ruth Joined the Megunticook Grange in Camden and has been a life member there.

She began her employment and career as a clerk at P.G. Willey Coal, Oil and Wood Company in Camden where she was employed for three years. Moving on, she became a bookkeeper and general office employee for Martin-Marietta, and the George H. Thomas Fuel Company.

On May 18, 1953, she married William Morton Lucas of Union, at the Chestnut Street Baptist Church in Camden. Together they made their home on Bayview Street in Camden. On July 16, 1954, they welcomed their only son, Gary Alan Lucas, into the family. In 1956 the family moved to Old County Road in Rockland where they resided until February 1959. At that point they purchased their home on Broadway in Rockland where they resided together until Mr. Lucas’ passing in 2009.

Always busy, Ruth worked at the Knox Hospital on the switchboard and in admissions until she retired in 1970. Ruth was the last survivor of the Castine ferry boat steamer that struck ledge on its way to Vinalhaven in June of 1935.

A woman of strong faith, Ruth was baptized at Chestnut Street Baptist Church in Camden. After moving to Rockland she joined the Littlefield Memorial Baptist Church on March 5, 1961. She was an active member there, serving as a Sunday School Teacher for many years.

Predeceased by her husband; two brothers, Ronald and Richard Freeman; and a sister-in-law, Donna Rogers Freeman; Ruth is survived by her son Gary A. Lucas of Farmingdale; her nephews, Scott Freeman and his wife Heather of Camden, John Freeman and his wife Paula of Thomaston, Jason Freeman and his companion Sarah Szwajkos of Camden, Kenneth Lucas of Jefferson; and one great-nephew, Noah Freeman of Thomaston.

Family and friends are invited to visit Tuesday, April 16, 2024, from 3 to 4 p.m., at Littlefield Memorial Baptist Church, 1 Waldo Avenue, Rockland, where a celebration of her life will be held immediately following at 4 p.m. A reception will follow downstairs in the fellowship hall.

Ruth will be laid to rest with her husband in the spring of 2024.
