BELFAST — “Swing dance enthusiasts in Belfast are in for a Fall treat as ‘Rumpus at the Bazz’ swings into town,” said Belfast Maskers, in a news release.

There will be a Lindy Hop and Swing Dance instructional class session followed by a community dance, all at the Basil Burwell Community Theater, 17 Court Street in Belfast, on Friday, Nov. 10. The class will be from 7 - 8 p.m., and the community dance will run from 8 until 10:30 p.m.

Instructors Stefan Durham and Bethany Powell are passionate about sharing their love for Lindy Hop and Swing Dance. With years of experience as instructors and performers, they are dedicated to creating a welcoming and dynamic dance community for all to enjoy. They competed nationally and internationally in the mid-2000s and taught Lindy Hop on the West Coast and in Colorado for years thereafter. With their guidance, attendees will have the chance to learn and refine their dance skills, step by step, in a fun and supportive environment.

The event was organized by Juliane Dow, "A Belfast native, retired back to my home place."

Dow loves to dance and is endeavoring to grow a swing dance community here in the Belfast area.

"Last spring I got my first introduction to Lindy Hop at a dance class offered in Rockland by Stefan and Bethany,” said Dow. “At the time I did not know any background info about these teachers. What I did know, after two one-hour classes with them, was that I wanted more chances to learn Lindy Hop!"

Lindy Hop is sometimes referred to as the "granddaddy" of all swing dances and is known for its joyful, rhythmic, and playful style. Lindy Hop combines elements of various dance forms, including the Charleston and tap dance, and evolved in the ballrooms and clubs of Harlem, New York City. Experienced dancers and complete beginners, those with partners and those flying solo are all encouraged to to attend this unique opportunity to learn, dance, and connect with a passionate community of dance and music lovers.

The evening culminates in a community dance, where attendees can put their newly acquired moves to the test on the dance floor to the tune of big band jazz, rocking blues, and some more contemporary music.

“This is a great autumn opportunity to socialize, make new friends, and stay warm by celebrating the joy of dancing,” said the Maskers.
