Rockport addresses proposed June Town Meeting article to keep library in situ
ROCKPORT — At their Monday, Feb. 9, meeting, the Rockport selectmen will discuss a citizen initiative to keep the town’s library exactly where it is. The Friends of Rockport are asking the Select Board to include on the June Town Meeting warrant a nonbinding ballot article asking, “To see if the Town will vote that any reconstruction, expansion, improvement, renovation or replacement of the Rockport Public Library be limited to its current location at 1 Limerock Street.”
The discussion, scheduled under “New Business,” follows another library-related agenda item that includes talking with the Library Committee about the “next steps to be taken vis-à-vis the library building and future plans for the library.”
The regularly scheduled meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the Rockport Opera House downstairs meeting room. It will also be televised on Public Access Channel 22.
The Library Committee has retained Portland Public Library’s Executive Director Steve Podgajny to spend the next several months studying the Rockport Public Library, specifically its programs and spaces.
The two matters — hiring an consultant to review the library’s programs, and the continued emphasis on the library’s location — reflects an ongoing and deep discussion about what, and where, the town wants its library to be.
In other new business, the Select Board will hear a request by Vivienne Larmor, Mama’s Boys, for a town installed street light at the entrance to the business driveway on Route 90.
And, the board will talk further about a “Fiber Optic Build-Out “study to be performed by Tilson Technology.
